How to Deal With Wet Insulation After a Water Damage

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

Wet insulation behind drywall Wet insulation was revealed after tearing down the drywall in this Rochester Hills, MI home

There can be confusion about insulation that’s been soaked or damaged by floodwaters. Does it breed mold and mildew? Will it eventually damage other structures such as drywall or tile floors?

Insulation comes in a variety of materials and is installed in many ways. For instance, there is fiberglass, cellulose, foam board, cotton, and spray foam.  Each type of insulation must be treated differently after water damage.  Because each of these materials has different properties, they will react differently from each other when affected by a Water Damage.

There is also the risk of toxins in water-damaged insulation. Floodwaters can carry potential toxins that remain in the insulation after the water recedes. Some types of insulation can retain moisture for a long time after the flood is gone.

Assessing and repairing water damage needs to take priority for homeowners who’ve been hit by a flood or storm. It’s not just a matter of aesthetics, though the odors can be unpleasant, it is important to your family’s health and safety that the insulation is handled by an expert.

We help homeowners analyze all of the issues concerning the repairs, salvage, disposal, insurance, and restoration installed. We can help you decide whether to remove and replace insulation after we’ve begun the job of assessing the damage and drying out the structure.

Cleanup and restoration after water damage is a comprehensive job. It requires skills, tools, and experience. SERVPRO has many resources to restore your home or business.

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Fallen ceiling after heavy rains in a bathroom Regular maintenance is key to protecting your home from water damage.

1. Keep trees trimmed

  • Regularly trimming trees will prevent tree limbs from potentially damaging your roof during a storm with high winds or heavy rain.

2. Keep gutters clean

  • Making sure your gutters are clear of debris year-round is essential to preventing major damage to your home.
  • If gutters are full, water may not be able to flow away from your house causing water damage or mold.

3. Keep your sump pump in working order

  • Checking on your sump pump regularly can prevent flooding during heavy rains.

4. Replace missing or damaged shingles

  • During a storm with heavy rain, water will try hard to find a way into your home. In order to avoid the headache of a roof leak, check the integrity of your shingles.

5. Repair loose siding

  • Just like shingles, loose or damaged siding can allow water to get into your home and potentially cause mold.

SERVPRO of Rochester received an emergency call for water damage.  The toilet overflow in the half bathroom caused two levels in her home to have water damage.  The water ran down a hallway and bedroom on the main level and into the basement affecting her furnace room, hallway, closet, and bathroom.

James Howard, our production manager received a letter in the mail from a satisfied customer, wishing him a nice holiday.  This is what she wrote:

Thank you so much for comforting me when I was so upset about our "toilet overflow".  I was hysterical!! I've really settled down, and everything looks like "it never even happened". The workers did a good job of putting everything back together again, but it was a very stressful fall.

Basement with shelves full of contents Hoarded basement in need of a pack-out after experiencing a water damage

This Farmington Hills, MI home experience flooding in their basement with contaminated water, however, this was not your typical flood. The homeowners happened to be hoarders and their basement was filled to the ceiling - there was barely any space to walk and most areas were not accessible.

Before going into the process of mitigating this loss, let's talk a little bit about what hoarding is.

Hoarding is the persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. The behavior usually has deleterious effects—emotional, physical, social, financial, and even legal—for a hoarder and family members.

For those who hoard, the quantity of their collected items sets them apart from other people. Commonly hoarded items may be newspapers, magazines, paper and plastic bags, cardboard boxes, photographs, household supplies, food, and clothing.

In a situation like this, our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians had to begin by throwing away all the contaminated items due to the quality of the water. It was not until everything was 'trashed out' that we were actually able to mitigate the damage to the structure.

Flooded Basement?

6/15/2021 (Permalink)

Before and after of a basement with saturated carpet and surrounding contents Before and after the cleanup of a basement that flooded during heavy rainfall in West Bloomfield, MI

As any Michigander knows, springtime means heavy rainfall for us. The April showers may bring May flowers and nice weather; however, it can also flood basements for a lot of homeowners. Most homeowners who have experienced or are prone to flooding in their basement may take some cautionary steps like waterproofing, gutter maintenance, proper landscaping, inspecting and repairing foundation cracks, sump pump maintenance, and even installing window well covers, however, heavy rainfall can cause your basement to flood despite all of it.

Basements can flood at any time, but primarily after winter moving into spring when we have a lot of rain combined with the ground thawing. Flooding can occur by seepage or flow through the walls or foundation floor, from surface water sources, or by a sanitary or storm sewer backup.

Most homeowner’s reaction when their basement floods is to panic and start trying to clean it up themselves, granted if it’s a tiny bit in a small area you may be able to, but typically the problem is too large for you to handle. That is where our water-certified SERVPRO of Rochester technicians come in. We are a 24-hour Emergency Service that can effectively work with you and your insurance company to extract the water, dry out the structure, demo any damaged materials such as wet walls and flooring, as well as assess and potentially restore any contents you may have in your basement.

Water in Your Crawl Space?

8/25/2020 (Permalink)

Here to Help SERVPRO technicians Our water technicians are Here to Help and Ready for Any Size Disaster.

Water in your crawl space can cause damage to your home

Excessive moisture in a crawl space can cause your foundation supports to warp and lose their structural integrity. Excessive moisture can promote the growth of Mold and Mildew. Standing water can attract pests and small animals.

What to do when you have water in your crawl space:

  • Have a professional inspect your crawl space for foundation cracks and broken pipes.
  • Dry out the crawl space by removing the excess water and moisture.
  • Clean up the crawl space by removing debris and wet insulation.

When to Call A Professional

Water mitigation is not a challenging task, but it is hard physical labor. You might want to consider the following:

A crawl space that is between 4 feet and 5 feet high is considered tall. Even such a tall crawlspace is very difficult to move around in. Many crawl spaces are lower than this.

Tight Access Point of entry makes it difficult to work in the crawl space. There may be only one small door that allows access to the crawl space, and can sometimes be in an inconvenient area, such as a bedroom closet or kitchen pantry floor.

Warning:  Rodents can often get into the crawl space.  Their droppings can contain harmful bacteria.

Call a Professional When You Have a Sump Pump Failure

Sump pump failure in a basement from storm Sump pump fails in the basement during a storm

When a homeowner in Rochester Hills called SERVPRO of Rochester to remove the water in their basement,  many items were wet and needed to be disposed of. SERVPRO of Rochester was able to sanitize and dry out the basement.

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

No power: If the power goes out during a storm, your sump pump won’t be able to drain the water

Wrong size: If your sump pump is too small for your home’s size, it might mean that its too big of a job for it to handle. On the flip side, running too large of a sump pump can shorten its lifespan.

Old age: Just like any appliance, the years can reduce the efficiency and working order of your sump pump. The average lifespan of a sump pump is roughly 10 years. If yours is creeping up in age, consider replacing it with a more current model.

Clogged pipe: Debris can enter your discharge pipe and create a backup. With nowhere for water to flow, your sump pump will come to a stop.

Lack of maintenance: Your home and the appliances that make it run require regular maintenance. Clean your sump pump three to four times a year to avoid blockages in your discharge line, vents, and floats.

Switch issues: When the sump pump shifts in the basin, the float that administers the switch can cause it to become jammed.

Product or installation problem: In addition to product defects, which are out of your control, improper installation can also cause sump pump failure.

How do Thermal Cameras Help Us with Your Water Damage?

6/10/2020 (Permalink)

Multicolor thermal image of a wet ceiling Thermal image camera captures a photo of a wet kitchen ceiling after a pipe break in the bathroom in Livonia.

Our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians are specially trained in Water Restoration and given a certification by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Cleaning) to ensure the best quality of work for our customers. To go one step further, our technicians have been trained to use Thermal Cameras to detect moisture and temperature discrepancies in your home or business. IR (Infrared) Thermal Camera technology is a powerful tool for discovering the source of a leak, determining is there is lingering moisture behind a wall before or after a dry-out and even to combat potential mold growth.

So How Do IR Cameras Work?

When water evaporates, it cools the surface temperature. Infrared cameras identify temperature differences to locate potential water damage. Infrared technology visually displays qualitative thermal differences often caused by water damage. In short, IR cameras do not directly detect moisture, they detect temperature, and water is extremely sensitive to these fluctuations.

If you have or had a water damage and are concerned about moisture, call our SERVPRO technicians at (248) 608-2667!
