How to Prevent Damage During a Wind Storm

9/14/2022 (Permalink)

Fallen tree on a home in Metro Detroit due to a major wind storm Fallen tree on a home in Metro Detroit due to a major wind storm

Even a wind storm can have disastrous effects on your property. That’s why it’s important to make a plan in advance to limit storm damage. Follow these tips so you know what to do before, during, and after a wind storm.

What To Do In Advance:

Wind damage comes from a variety of storms and each has its own ways to prepare. Be sure that everyone in your home or business knows what to do in case of the most likely storms for your area. If you operate a store, restaurant, or other business that deals with many members of the public at once, be sure your staff knows how to escort them to shelter.

  • Stock up on emergency supplies. Be sure the first aid kit is stocked and the flashlights have working batteries. A generator can power a house and costs a few hundred dollars - which may be well worth your money when you are without it for an extended amount of time. Solar panels that can charge cell phones are available online for under $50 as well.
  • Know how to turn off utilities or override electronics. Depending on any wind or flood damage, you may need to turn off the water or circuit box. If the power goes out, cars will be stuck inside a garage with an electric opener unless you know how to use the manual override.
  • Give the roof a checkup. Be sure there aren’t any loose or missing shingles that could blow away during a storm or let in rain. It’s better to make repairs during good weather than to try to get a tarp over a hole in the roof during a thunderstorm.
  • Check the perimeter. When you know a storm is on the way, do a quick check outside if there’s enough time. Put lawn furniture in the shed, pick up toys, put cars and bicycles in the garage, and fasten loose items, like patio umbrellas. Not only will these items blow away in a storm, but they can cause a great deal of damage in the process. A lawn chair can shatter a window, while a bike can put a huge dent in a car. Be sure to close any awnings too; even a mild wind storm can tear fabric from the frame.
  • Back up your computers frequently. If your electronics suffer flood damage or any kind of storm damage, you’ll be glad you took the time to back up your files. Cloud backup services are available for free from Dropbox, Google, and other providers for a set amount of data and extra amounts of storage can be purchased for a nominal fee. The advantage of a cloud backup service is that you can access them from anywhere; if your home or business is damaged, you can use a computer or smart device anywhere that has internet access.
  • Be sure you have a weather app on your smartphone and enable severe weather alerts. You won’t be near a TV or computer for every storm, so you need a way to check on the severity of storms and know when to take cover.

We do experience heavy thunderstorms in Michigan with very strong winds. so make sure you take the time to go over these precautionary steps. If you do suffer damage to your home or business call at SERVPRO of Rochester at (248) 608-2667

The Benefits of Using an Infrared Camera to Detect Water Damages

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

Thermal image of water damage Thermal camera image of a shower ceiling and wall

Finding water damage can sometimes be challenging. Water often travels the path of least resistance, which means water coming in from a roof leak might enter your ceiling and travel to the lowest point often pooling or leaking down into a light fixture in the middle of the room.

Using an Infrared camera to identify the source of the water damage can help SERVPRO of Rochester restore your home. Thermal imaging can detect damp spots on floors, ceilings, and walls. Using the Infrared camera has helped us determine hidden water damage in a ceiling. The rainbow-colored images can help our technicians spot moisture in the Our technicians use the IR camera to detect the moisture before physical damage or mold is evident. Using moisture meters along with the IR camera can confirm the presence of water.

How to Deal With Wet Insulation After a Water Damage

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

Wet insulation behind drywall Wet insulation was revealed after tearing down the drywall in this Rochester Hills, MI home

There can be confusion about insulation that’s been soaked or damaged by floodwaters. Does it breed mold and mildew? Will it eventually damage other structures such as drywall or tile floors?

Insulation comes in a variety of materials and is installed in many ways. For instance, there is fiberglass, cellulose, foam board, cotton, and spray foam.  Each type of insulation must be treated differently after water damage.  Because each of these materials has different properties, they will react differently from each other when affected by a Water Damage.

There is also the risk of toxins in water-damaged insulation. Floodwaters can carry potential toxins that remain in the insulation after the water recedes. Some types of insulation can retain moisture for a long time after the flood is gone.

Assessing and repairing water damage needs to take priority for homeowners who’ve been hit by a flood or storm. It’s not just a matter of aesthetics, though the odors can be unpleasant, it is important to your family’s health and safety that the insulation is handled by an expert.

We help homeowners analyze all of the issues concerning the repairs, salvage, disposal, insurance, and restoration installed. We can help you decide whether to remove and replace insulation after we’ve begun the job of assessing the damage and drying out the structure.

Cleanup and restoration after water damage is a comprehensive job. It requires skills, tools, and experience. SERVPRO has many resources to restore your home or business.

Tips to Prevent Water Damage During Heavy Storms

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Fallen ceiling after heavy rains in a bathroom Regular maintenance is key to protecting your home from water damage.

1. Keep trees trimmed

  • Regularly trimming trees will prevent tree limbs from potentially damaging your roof during a storm with high winds or heavy rain.

2. Keep gutters clean

  • Making sure your gutters are clear of debris year-round is essential to preventing major damage to your home.
  • If gutters are full, water may not be able to flow away from your house causing water damage or mold.

3. Keep your sump pump in working order

  • Checking on your sump pump regularly can prevent flooding during heavy rains.

4. Replace missing or damaged shingles

  • During a storm with heavy rain, water will try hard to find a way into your home. In order to avoid the headache of a roof leak, check the integrity of your shingles.

5. Repair loose siding

  • Just like shingles, loose or damaged siding can allow water to get into your home and potentially cause mold.

Following these basic home maintenance tips can help prevent damage from storms, however, things can still happen and if they do we are Here to Help.

April Showers Bring May Flowers (and Flooded Basements)

4/19/2022 (Permalink)

bursting water in a living room compared to a spilled water bottle Skip the stress, call in the professionals!

As any Michigander knows, springtime means heavy rainfall for us. The April showers may bring May flowers and nice weather; however, it can also flood basements for a lot of homeowners. Most homeowners who have experienced or are prone to flooding in their basement may take some cautionary steps like waterproofing, gutter maintenance, proper landscaping, inspecting and repairing foundation cracks, sump pump maintenance, and even installing window well covers, however, heavy rainfall can cause your basement to flood despite all of it.

Basements can flood at any time, but primarily after winter moving into spring when we have a lot of rain combined with the ground thawing. Flooding can occur by seepage or flow through the walls or foundation floor, from surface water sources, or by a sanitary or storm sewer backup.

Most homeowners’ first reaction when their basement floods is to panic and start trying to clean it up themselves, granted if it’s a tiny bit in a small area you may be able to, but typically the problem is too large for you to handle. That is where our water-certified SERVPRO of Rochester technicians come in. We are a 24-hour Emergency Service that can effectively work with you and your insurance company to extract the water, dry out the structure, demo any damaged materials such as wet walls and flooring, as well as assess and potentially restore any contents you may have in your basement.

Flooding can happen any time of the year but as we know, In Michigan, we are entering the wet and rainy season of the year.

Here a few of tips that can help prevent damage to your home or business.

Gutters – Keeping well maintained gutter systems can help with diverting the water to drainage areas.  If your gutters have leaves and debris in them the rainwater will overflow and can pool up near your foundation causing damage to your basement.

Grading the Yard – Adding top soil to the low spots around your foundation wall can help drain the water away from the foundation.

Response plan – Have a plan of action if a storm hits.  In the event of flooding, make sure that you have a program in place to handle the flooding and damage.

The Importance of HVAC When Dealing With Fire, Smoke, and Soot

10/8/2021 (Permalink)

Air filter full of soot Air filter that caused a fire

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, however, the biggest culprit of fires is your furnace. In fact, according to FEMA, heating appliances were the second highest cause of residential building fires in 2014- specifically furnace flame rollout.

Flame rollout happens when flames escape and “roll” outside of the closed combustion area.
If those open flames come into contact with insulation or nearby flammable objects, you will be dealing with a dangerous house fire.

Flame rollout happens when there isn’t enough oxygen to “feed” your furnace. Your furnace needs a mixture of oxygen and fuel to create heat, but if there’s not enough ventilation to provide oxygen, the furnace flames will “roll out” in search of oxygen elsewhere.

Tips on how to keep your furnace safe from flame rollout include:

  • Regularly check and change your air filter- A clogged air filter can cause a buildup of soot inside the flue (the tunnel where combustion gases exit outdoors). And when soot buildup blocks the flue, this also restricts your furnace’s oxygen supply.
  • Check for obstructions in your furnace flue- Your furnace flue connects to the outside, so obstructions like a bird’s nest, leaves, or other debris are very likely and can prevent your furnace from getting oxygen.
  • Install a rollout switch- These devices detect and shut off power to the furnace when the burner area exceeds normal and safe temperatures. This prevents rollout from happening in the first place.
  • Schedule annual furnace maintenance- Annual maintenance allows our techs to spot any issues early on that could lead to flame rollout. We’ll make sure everything is working properly to avoid the abnormal situations that lead to flame rollout.

SERVPRO of Rochester will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.

The overwhelmed sewers and saturated ground sent contaminated water into basements, crawl spaces, and foundations.  Having a Professional assessment from a reputable flood recovery company is always recommended.

Calling SERVPRO of Rochester after a flood damage will increase the chances of a safe cleanup.  The SERVPRO crews are ready to remove the contaminated water and dry out your home.  If the water is left standing in your home, you could increase the risk for Mold.  It can take as little as 48 -72 hours for mold to grow and be visible.

Whether you are filing an insurance claim, or you are paying directly out of pocket, SERVPRO of Rochester can walk you through the job process and provide an estimate with industry standard pricing for all the work that needs to be performed to clean up the water.

Smoke Detectors Save Lives

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke detector on ceiling Make sure to install smoke detectors on every level of your home

Smoke alarms play an important role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters, and on every level of the house.  Business owners should consult their local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan.  Having a plan allows for a quick escape in an emergency situation.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms.  Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year.  We have found it useful to change the batteries when daylight savings time either begins or ends.  If an alarm "chirps," the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Commercial Water Loss Causes

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

Water loss in a large warehouse with fans and caution tape Warehouse Water Damage in Farmington Hills, MI Business

Besides a natural disaster or large-scale storm, there are other potential causes for a water damage at your business. It is true that commercial water damages are often the result of weather events such as heavy rains and storms, however, there are regular maintenance issues that could cause damage to company equipment, inventory, and other valuable assets. Our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians are highly trained and knowledgeable in all of the possible causes for a water loss to occur in your commercial property.

Other Causes of Water Damage in Your Business:

  • Sprinkler System Malfunction - Sprinkler systems are a must for businesses because it helps protect the building in fire emergencies, offering the first line of defense when smoke is detected. However, when the sprinkler system is outdated and showing signs of wear and tear, the sprinklers can malfunction and cause water damage to everything inside the building.
  • Burst pipes– There are many reasons why pipes can burst and cause water damage. One potential reason could be an extremely cold day that can freeze the water in the pipes. Since water expands as it freezes, this expansion can crack and break the pipes that the water needs to flow through.
  • Clogged sewer system– Another possible reason for a commercial water damage is toilets and sewer systems getting clogged. Toilets and sewer lines can get clogged very easily and when a sewer line is clogged, flooding can occur anytime someone flushes a toilet or pours water down a sink.
  • Leaking roof– When the roof is not regularly checked and maintained, it can suffer damage from exposure to changing weather. Even if you are just experiencing a rainstorm, when your roof has a leak, it can become detrimental and damage the inside of your building.

If you have a water damage in your commercial property, call SERVPRO of Rochester at (248) 608-2887.

How to Prepare Your Kids For Emergencies

9/22/2021 (Permalink)

Graphic of a house with the words "Is your family prepared?" Make sure to practice your emergency readiness plan with your family regularly

The fourth and final theme of this National Preparedness Month 2021 is teaching the youth about preparedness. Make sure your entire family, including kids, are aware of your emergency preparedness plan. In addition, practice it so they know what to do and how to respond in the face of an emergency. A few steps to talk through with your kids are:

  1. Who to contact - make sure they have your phone number memorized as well as other emergency contact information and numbers.
    • Tip: pick someone out of town for an emergency contact as they might be easier to reach if there is a local disaster.
  1. Where to meet – Talk through with your family on where to meet in case of an emergency. Pick a familiar and accessible place where you can take shelter if needed.
    • Tip: Make sure the place you decide on is pet friendly if applicable.
  1. Practice! Hold regular household meetings with your family to discuss your plan and keep copies of your contact information somewhere safe like a backpack or cellphone.

Ready.Gov has fun interactive games for children to play in order to help prepare the youth for emergencies. Check it out here: https://www.ready.gov/kids/make-a-plan

As National Preparedness Month 2021 comes to an end, SERVPRO of Rochester, Michigan wants to remind you that emergencies and disasters happen year round. Make sure you and your family are staying vigilant each month by keeping up to date with your preparedness kits and looking out for alerts.

Financially Preparing for Emergency Disasters

9/17/2021 (Permalink)

Graphic with the words "National Preparedness Month - its never to early to prepare" Make sure your family is prepared by being financially ready for an emergency disaster

For the third theme of National Preparedness Month in 2021, the focus is on getting financially prepared for an emergency disaster. Ready.Gov highlights some ways that homeowners can get prepared at either no cost or a low cost. In addition to the resources listed on Ready.Gov, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers a plethora of resources that can be shipped directly to your home.

At SERVPRO of Rochester MI, we are able to work directly with your insurance company to ease the stress during emergency disasters. It’s extremely important that homeowners make sure that they are adequately covered for emergencies that the region is prone to. For example, if your home is in a flood zone, flood insurance should be a priority. Likewise, if your home is in an area where wildfires are prevalent, insurance for wildfires is a must. The Red Cross has an interactive map that shows common disasters across the United States by region and what you should be prepared for.

To get started, here are a few tips you should consider in order to get financially prepared for an emergency disaster:

  1. Gather financial, medical, personal, and household information and keep them in an accessible safe space.
  1. Keep small amounts of cash in your home for items such as food, gas, or other supplies in the event that you cannot get to an ATM. In addition, consider opening a savings account and saving up money for potential disasters.
  1. Keep on top of your homeowners or renters, health and life insurance. Consider purchasing flood insurance from the national flood insurance program as well as reviewing your policy to make sure you’re adequately covered.

For more tips and resources on how to prepare financially, click on any of the links above in this blog or contact us at (248) 608-2667

Hoarding Plus a Water Damage? Yikes!

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

Basement with shelves full of contents Hoarded basement in need of a pack-out after experiencing a water damage

This Farmington Hills, MI home experience flooding in their basement with contaminated water, however, this was not your typical flood. The homeowners happened to be hoarders and their basement was filled to the ceiling - there was barely any space to walk and most areas were not accessible.

Before going into the process of mitigating this loss, let's talk a little bit about what hoarding is.

Hoarding is the persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. The behavior usually has deleterious effects—emotional, physical, social, financial, and even legal—for a hoarder and family members.

For those who hoard, the quantity of their collected items sets them apart from other people. Commonly hoarded items may be newspapers, magazines, paper and plastic bags, cardboard boxes, photographs, household supplies, food, and clothing.

In a situation like this, our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians had to begin by throwing away all the contaminated items due to the quality of the water. It was not until everything was 'trashed out' that we were actually able to mitigate the damage to the structure.

Flooded Basement?

6/15/2021 (Permalink)

Before and after of a basement with saturated carpet and surrounding contents Before and after the cleanup of a basement that flooded during heavy rainfall in West Bloomfield, MI

Most homeowner’s reaction when their basement floods is to panic and start trying to clean it up themselves, granted if it’s a tiny bit in a small area you may be able to, but typically the problem is too large for you to handle.

Sump pump failures are one of the most common calls we get during and after storm events. Although a sump pump is supposed to prevent basements from flooding, they can often fail when overloaded with too much water. Another reason why your sump pump might fail is if there is a power outage during a storm.

In this case, the homeowner's sump pump failed causing the 4000 square foot basement to flood with an inch of water. There affected materials included carpet, pad, drywall, ceramic tile, and parquet flooring. Our crew was out there within an hour of receiving the call in order to prevent any further damage from occurring. Dealing with a sump pump loss during a storm can be stressful, know that you can trust SERVPRO of Rochester MI to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

How to Handle a Roof Leak

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

Water coming from ceiling causing damage Damage to the ceiling of a home in Birmingham, Michigan due to a roof leak

During the rainy season in Michigan two of the worst words a home or business owner can hear are ‘roof leak.’ With an early spring this year, there a few tips we would like to share with you about identifying the source area in the beginning, all the way to the leak potentially becoming an emergency.

First things first, here are a few of the many places water typically comes through your roof:

  1. Worn, broken or missing shingles
  2. Where nails have worked loose
  3. Corroded or poorly sealed roof flashing around vents, skylights or chimneys
  4. Along the intersections of roof planes

Along with being a major inconvenience, a roof leak can cause serious problems for business and homeowners. They can ruin insulation, become a home for black mold to spread, damage interior ceilings and walls, rot the wooden framing, and above all – ruin your belongings.

Here are a few things to check up on that will cause your roof to leak:

  1. The age of your roof
  2. Brick chimneys
  3. Flashing
  4. Missing shingles
  5. Vent Boot
  6. Holes
  7. Complex roof architecture
  8. Clogged gutters
  9. Skylights
  10. Shiners

A roof leak during a storm can become a major emergency, especially in a rainy Michigan spring. However, after the storm is a whole other ballgame and that is where we, SERVPRO of Rochester, come in. If water has affected the contents of your home due to a leaky roof, we can work with you and your insurance company to clean up the mess as well assess and potentially restore your contents as quickly as possible.

It's our best tip we can give–full stop. Shut off the source of the water if you experience a major leak or water loss.

When you first notice a water leak or water damage in your home or business, shutting off the water is the first thing you should do in order to prevent any further damage. It's important that every person in the home not only knows where the water shut off is but also how to turn it off as there are different types. Respectively, business owners should inform managers and other employees of where and how to shut off the water to prevent further damage.

One of the services that we offer for free at SERVPRO of Rochester is an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP). These Emergency Ready Profiles help businesses and homeowners stay prepared for the unexpected. If you would like to set up an appointment for a completely free ERP, contact us here or call 248-608-2667 and we would be happy to help!

With our drying chamber and document restoration processes, priceless family photos and valuable documents can be salvaged if damaged during a water loss.

Many restoration companies see water saturated items as a total loss or unsalvageable, but at SERVPRO of Rochester we have been able to recover our customers valuable items that may seem irreparable due to water damage.

Our team recently completed a large water, fire, and mold job (the ultimate trifecta) at an apartment complex after one of the units caught on fire due to a lightning strike. After the fire was put out by the firefighters, it sat for two weeks while under investigation causing extensive water and mold damage. The tenants were not allowed in due to the dangerous conditions and were told nothing would be able to be recovered. Our pack out crew immediately went to work to salvage as much as possible for these customers.

We were able to recover items such as precious photos and documents, oil paintings, clothing,  antique furniture, and much more by using our advanced drying processes such as the drying chamber. Fast forward to a few weeks later, the tenants are in their new apartments and have been reunited with their belongings in pristine condition.

Why Your Business Should Have an Emergency Ready Profile

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

Emergency ready program logo Emergency Ready Profile

An ERP (Emergency Readiness Plan) is a method of planning for emergencies long before they occur. It’s a carefully devised, well-rehearsed strategy that guides you and your employees to take decisive action during a catastrophe. This well-oiled machine will give any employee in the building the necessary tools to effectively handle an emergency.

DETERMINE PROTECTIVE ACTIONS

In addition to emergency phone numbers, shut-off areas, and preventative procedures it is necessary to create an ERP that protects anyone in the building. The Department of Homeland Security refers to this as “Protective Actions for Life Safety,” including:

  • Fire Drills -- Rehearsals for action during a fire.
  • Sheltering -- Sheltering staff during a natural disaster.
  • Sheltering in Place -- Sheltering staff during a man-made emergency.
  • Lockdown -- Eluding an active shooter

SERVPRO of Rochester and the SERVPRO Ready Plan information will give you the security of emergency preparedness. The information can be downloaded into the Ready Plan app to instantly share with SERVPRO so that the damage can be intercepted. We’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO® of Rochester was called out after hours to extract water in an 18,000 square foot commercial building where a water loss occurred. The areas that were affected were cubicles, a large warehouse, bathrooms, hallways, and storage areas. Our crew was able to get out to the building immediately to prevent any further damage to their high tech equipment and important documents. Because half of the building did not have heat, the water technicians used water extraction equipment, industrial-grade dehumidifiers, and multiple different high-speed air movers to assist in the remediation. Another key piece of equipment that was used in the drying process of this job was a Phoenix Firebird. The Firebird is a machine that allows for on-demand heating to indoor and outdoor areas where heat is not available.

How to Prepare for a Windstorm to Minimize Damage

9/14/2020 (Permalink)

Tree that fell on the roof and home that fell after a windstorm A tree fell on the roof of a home after a severe windstorm in Oakland county, MI

The Importance of HVAC When Dealing With Fire, Smoke, and Soot

9/11/2020 (Permalink)

Black air filter filled with soot Air filter that caused a fire

Water in Your Crawl Space?

8/25/2020 (Permalink)

Here to Help SERVPRO technicians Our water technicians are Here to Help and Ready for Any Size Disaster.

Water in your crawl space can cause damage to your home

Excessive moisture in a crawl space can cause your foundation supports to warp and lose their structural integrity. Excessive moisture can promote the growth of Mold and Mildew. Standing water can attract pests and small animals.

What to do when you have water in your crawl space:

  • Have a professional inspect your crawl space for foundation cracks and broken pipes.
  • Dry out the crawl space by removing the excess water and moisture.
  • Clean up the crawl space by removing debris and wet insulation.

When to Call A Professional

Water mitigation is not a challenging task, but it is hard physical labor. You might want to consider the following:

A crawl space that is between 4 feet and 5 feet high is considered tall. Even such a tall crawlspace is very difficult to move around in. Many crawl spaces are lower than this.

Tight Access Point of entry makes it difficult to work in the crawl space. There may be only one small door that allows access to the crawl space, and can sometimes be in an inconvenient area, such as a bedroom closet or kitchen pantry floor.

Warning:  Rodents can often get into the crawl space.  Their droppings can contain harmful bacteria.

Tips for Being Prepared for a Flood:

Before the Flood:

  • Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
  • Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent floodwater from backing up into the drains of your home or business.
  • Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage.

During the Flood:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.

After the Flood:

  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community's water supply is safe to drink.
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Call a Professional When You Have a Sump Pump Failure

8/21/2020 (Permalink)

Sump pump failure in a basement from storm Sump pump fails in the basement during a storm

When a homeowner in Rochester Hills called SERVPRO of Rochester to remove the water in their basement,  many items were wet and needed to be disposed of. SERVPRO of Rochester was able to sanitize and dry out the basement.

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

No power: If the power goes out during a storm, your sump pump won’t be able to drain the water

Wrong size: If your sump pump is too small for your home’s size, it might mean that its too big of a job for it to handle. On the flip side, running too large of a sump pump can shorten its lifespan.

Old age: Just like any appliance, the years can reduce the efficiency and working order of your sump pump. The average lifespan of a sump pump is roughly 10 years. If yours is creeping up in age, consider replacing it with a more current model.

Clogged pipe: Debris can enter your discharge pipe and create a backup. With nowhere for water to flow, your sump pump will come to a stop.

Lack of maintenance: Your home and the appliances that make it run require regular maintenance. Clean your sump pump three to four times a year to avoid blockages in your discharge line, vents, and floats.

Switch issues: When the sump pump shifts in the basin, the float that administers the switch can cause it to become jammed.

Product or installation problem: In addition to product defects, which are out of your control, improper installation can also cause sump pump failure.

How do Thermal Cameras Help Us with Your Water Damage?

6/10/2020 (Permalink)

Multicolor thermal image of a wet ceiling Thermal image camera captures a photo of a wet kitchen ceiling after a pipe break in the bathroom in Livonia.

Our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians are specially trained in Water Restoration and given a certification by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Cleaning) to ensure the best quality of work for our customers. To go one step further, our technicians have been trained to use Thermal Cameras to detect moisture and temperature discrepancies in your home or business. IR (Infrared) Thermal Camera technology is a powerful tool for discovering the source of a leak, determining is there is lingering moisture behind a wall before or after a dry-out and even to combat potential mold growth.

So How Do IR Cameras Work?

When water evaporates, it cools the surface temperature. Infrared cameras identify temperature differences to locate potential water damage. Infrared technology visually displays qualitative thermal differences often caused by water damage. In short, IR cameras do not directly detect moisture, they detect temperature, and water is extremely sensitive to these fluctuations.

Commercial Water Loss Causes

SERVPRO fans placed in a warehouse for drying Warehouse Water Damage in Farmington Hills, MI Business

If you have a water damage in your commercial property, call SERVPRO of Rochester at (248) 427-1500.

Dehumidifier on puddled carpet Drying carpet in a commercial building

The past few decades have seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Rochester professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment:

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Water Extraction Equipment:

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment:

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from the ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

High-speed air movers cause moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization:

Water and fire damage often causes powerful odors. The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

Air scrubbers

Thermal foggers and deodorization agents

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments:

The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

Do you have a Stubborn odor that Cannot be Removed?

2/21/2020 (Permalink)

Front end of a car with the words "Deodorize with ozone odor removal, car, home, office, locker room" Whether it’s a smoky smell in a vehicle, or a locker room full of stinky equipment, we’ve got odor solutions for any size job.

The science of identifying and eliminating odors can be tricky, but as pros in deodorization, we're able to take care of it.

SERVPRO of Rochester can help identify and remove the odor. We have several odor removal products to help remove offensive odors. One technique used for stubborn odors is an Ozone generator to destroy stubborn odors, such as tobacco, soot, animal, and mildew odors. Many deodorizers simply mask odors, but an Ozone generator can remove the odor.

How does an Ozone generator work?

Ozone reacts to the odors through an oxidation process to change the molecular structure.

Are there dangers when using an Ozone generator?

The area being treated by an Ozone generator must be free from humans, pets, and plants.  The treated space must then be circulated with fresh air before people and pets can go in.

An Ozone generator can be a safe and effective tool to remove stubborn odors. Our technicians are highly trained with years of experience, call SERVPRO of Rochester at (248) 608-2667 to safely eliminate odors from your home or business.

National Battery Day 2020

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Back of a Green SERVPRO truck According to the US Fire Administration, smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once a year.

National battery day is observed every year on February 18th and it's a great way to remind homeowners as well as business owners to practice safe battery practices.

Batteries die, and other parts of the smoke detector can wear out over time. Testing them regularly and replacing batteries is one way to help ensure your family stays safe should there be a fire in your home.

Battery recycling is another important practice that consumers can participate in to help protect the environment and prevent fires. According to HOBI.com- a company dedicated to secure sustainable solutions, by recycling batteries, you can reduce the number of hazardous materials being put into the landfill which helps conserve our natural resources.

SERVPRO of Rochester is dedicated to enhancing sustainability practices alongside our community in an effort to reduce environmental harm. Here is a link Oakland County residents can visit to find out how to dispose of or recycle batteries: http://rrrasoc.org/about-us/event-schedule/#HHW

Smoke Detectors Save Lives

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

National Preparedness Month wording on multi color background September is national preparedness month, check your smoke detectors and stay prepared!

Smoke alarms play a important role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house.

Water in Your Crawl Space?

7/31/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Rochester clean up Water in Crawl Space in Oakland Township, Michigan

Water mitigation is not a challenging task, but it is hard, physical labor.

IR (Infrared) Thermal Camera technology is a powerful tool for discovering the source of a leak, determining is there is lingering moisture behind a wall before or after a dry-out and even to combat potential mold growth.

So How Do IR Cameras Work?

When water evaporates, it cools surface temperature. Infrared cameras identify temperature differences to locate potential water damage. Infrared technology visually displays qualitative thermal differences often caused by water damage. In short, IR cameras do not directly detect moisture, they detect temperature, and water is extremely sensitive to these fluctuations.

If you have or had a water damage and are concerned about moisture, call our SERVPRO technicians at (248) 608-2667!

Commercial Water Loss Causes

Warehouse Water Damage in Farmington Hills, MI Business

If you have a water damage in your commercial property, call SERVPRO of Rochester at (248) 427-1500.

How Does SERVPRO Handle Your Belongings?

SERVPRO of Rochester packed out a home after a water loss.

In the event of a disaster in your home, whether it be water, fire, mold, or sewage, SERVPRO of Rochester will be there to take care of all your personal belongings alongside the home itself. When we come into your home to do mitigation, we may require something called a Pack-Out, meaning we assess and carefully pack up the contents of your home that do not need to be disposed of.

During a pack-out we will address if the contents of your home including furniture, need to be cleaned – meaning they were affected by the type of loss you had, stored only – meaning unaffected, or disposed of – meaning they are affected beyond repair.

During a pack-out we use an industry specific software to categorize and photo inventory your belongings, that way we can provide the list to you and your insurance company/adjuster to review. This is also to ensure that once your contents are brought to our climate-controlled facility, we can pull any items or boxes that you would like back sooner than others by way of the software showing us exactly where it’s at and what it’s labeled as.

We try to make the devastation of a disaster in your home easier on you by making sure the process of a pack-out is painless from start to finish.

Friends Don't Let Friends Hoard

Hoarders basement

Our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians handle many complicated situations - one of which includes hoarding. Water, fire, and mold damages are much more complicated in a hoarder home - more obstacles, more damaged belongings, and more sensitive situations with homeowners.

Here are a list of risk factors when it comes to hoarding:

Homelessness

Homelessness can result if the local Department of Public Health must order the person out of or condemn the dwelling or if the landlord demonstrates in court that the level or type of hoarding seriously violates the lease. Shelters have also been known to bar individuals whose hoarding puts other shelter guests at risk.

Health Problems

Health problems include falls or accidents and inability of emergency personnel to enter or remove an ill person. Clutter, garbage, animal or human feces and resulting mold or infestation can also cause respiratory and other health problems. Lack of sanitation can be particularly unsafe for immune compromised individuals. Ammonia levels from accumulations of urine and feces can easily exceed maximum occupational exposure limits, and can be harmful to persons with cardiac or respiratory dysfunction.

Personal Safety

Blocked exits or heating vents can also pose a fire hazard and occasionally the nature or extent of hoarded items creates structural dangers due to excess weight. Hoarding of dangerous or flammable items poses great health and safety risks.

Animal Safety

Improper care or neglect of animals can put people at risk of committing felony-level crimes, resulting in forfeiture of animals, fines, and imprisonment.

For more information on these risks click here.

7 Signs You May Have Mold in Your Home

9/25/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growth in basement.

When is it Time to Call in the Professionals?

Since mold isn't always visible or easy to spot, it's important to know what to look out for so you can take care of any issues if you have some — you don't want your health to suffer just because your house looks clean enough. Although toxic mold can bring on the most serious health problems, all mold and mildew can cause health issues — especially for those who suffer from allergies."

1. There's a smell.

  • One of the first signs will be a musty smell. If you smell mold, it is most likely there and that is a cause to take action.

2. You have a chronic cough.

  • Toxic black mold can cause respiratory-related health problems. This can lead to a chronic cough, shortness of breath or sinus congestion.

3. You have skin rashes.

  • Toxic mold can cause itchy and uncomfortable rashes, as many people are actually allergic to mold.

4. You are having trouble focusing.

  • The presence of toxic mold can affect the brain. This can lead to problems concentrating and even memory loss.

5. You feel fatigued.

  • Toxic mold can cause chronic fatigue and weakness. This fatigue is most likely to kick in on humid days and you may feel relief around an air conditioner or fresh air.

6. Your walls are discolored.

  • It can be hard to determine between other causes of discoloration and potential toxic mold, but SERVPRO of Rochester professionals can come out and take a look to determine your issue and the best course of action.

7. You see staining.

  • Mold is not always obvious and can sometimes look like a typical stain. This is because when mold rubs off on a surface it can leave just spots or patches. Different molds have different growth patterns and some show up more than others. If you are noticing spots, call us to come check it out.

Hoarding Plus a Water Damage? Yikes!

Basement Filled

In a situation like this our SERVPRO of Rochester technicians had to begin by throwing away all the contaminated items due to the quality of the water. It was not until everything was 'trashed out' that we were actually able to mitigate the damage to the structure.

Do You Understand the Mold Remediation Process?

9/19/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Test Area

Understanding Mold and Our Remediation Process

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and they may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Let your nose lead the way. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:

  1. Emergency Contact - (248) 608-2667

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

  1. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

  1. Mold Containment

Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

  1. Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

  1. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.

  1. Cleaning Contents and Belongings

We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

  1. Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

Benefact Fact Sheet

Have you ever wondered what a cleaning company's chemicals consist of and what the effects of them are on you and your home? Traditionally, household and even commercial grade chemicals are particularly harmful to your health. This is not the case when it comes to SERVPRO and our chemicals.

SERVPRO Industries carefully formulates and creates our own chemicals to properly treat every surface that we deal with during a damage, however, there is one solitary chemical we do not formulate called Benefact.

In nature, plants produce germ-killing essential oils to protect themselves from invading microbes, similar to how our bodies produce antibodies for our protection against disease. Benefact is a revolutionary blend of these antimicrobial extracts, particularly from the herb Thyme. Disinfectants typically use quaternary amines, bleach or even synthetic thymol to kill germs. Remarkably, Benefact kills over 99.99% of germs using only food-grade plant extracts.

SERVPRO makes sure that everything we use in your home is safe for our customers; Benefact is an all natural chemical we use for disinfecting that our customers could actually eat!

How to Safely Use a Portable Generator

Carbon Monoxide Hazard

With the recent tragedy in Fenton Township, where a family of six were victims of carbon monoxide poisoning from the use of a portable generator, SERVPRO of Rochester wants to help keep your family safe during a power outage.  A portable generator can be a powerful tool during a power outage or natural disaster, but it can also be dangerous -- even deadly -- if not properly installed and operated. On average, 75 people are killed in the United States each year by carbon monoxide associated with the use of generators. Make sure you know how to use generators safely before you put yourself -- and your loved ones -- at risk.
